Can You Create NETWORKING Opportunities… You Bet!
Networking is building personal relationships and one of the main ingredients necessary for building a personal relationship is contact.
You need to reach out and touch someone as often as possible without it feeling forced. One way to ensure contact with others is for you to create opportunities for that contact.
One way to create contact opportunities is to LISTEN UP to what others are interested in. If you hear they have a strong allegiance to a certain sports team ask if they want to place a friendly wager on their team. Take the Super Bowl for instance. At that time of the year a lot of people are willing to place a wager on the game. You do not want to place a large wager on the game in fact you only want to bet a dollar or two. Keep in mind to keep it friendly! Remember it isn’t the amount of the bet that is important you simply want a reason to contact that person again.
When you make the bet hope you lose. This will give you an additional chance to contact the person and demonstrate to them that you have integrity. When you send them their winnings make sure you don’t send them old worn out bills. This is a reflection on you so make sure they are crisp and clean. I usually bet two dollars and send brand new two dollar bills. You can get them from your bank at no extra charge and people love them. It is funny how people treasure a two dollar bill and if and when they spend it guess whose name will come to mind. See how you created an opportunity to contact someone in a very positive manner?
The worst thing that can happen is you win the bet and the other person doesn’t pay you. If that happens do not make a big deal out of it. Remember this exercise is to create good-will. Of course you now have learned some valuable information regarding the other person’s integrity.
